Leonard Cohen: Show Me the Place

Hat tip to Jeff the Baptist for uncovering this gem.  Geez, Leonard Cohen got me through several pre-real-life crises in college. I was torn to hear that he had fallen on hard times after getting conned by his manager and had to declare bankrcuptcy.  Here’s hoping the old man is finding his feet again.

I’ve always thought his melancholic take on spirituality is a very authentic voice.

Leonard Cohen has released his first new song since 2004, and that’s definitely reason for joy. The track is titled “Show Me the Place” and it’s the lead single off his upcoming new album “Old Ideas” which is set for release on January 31st, 2012. Over the sound of a lonely piano and a bittersweet violin, Cohen, who is now 77 years old, asks in his clasic grave vocal tone, to be shown “the place where you want your slave to go.”

Show me the place, where you want your slave to go
Show me the place, I’ve forgotten I don’t know
Show me the place where my head is bending low
Show me the place, where you want your slave to go

Show me the place, help me roll away the stone
Show me the place, I can’t move this thing alone
Show me the place where the word became a man
Show me the place where the suffering began

The troubles came I saved what I could save
A shred of light, a particle away
But there were chains so I hastened to behave
There were chains, a lot of chains
Like a spade

Show me the place, where you want your slave to go
Show me the place, I’ve forgotten I don’t know
Show me the place, where my head is bending low
Show me the place, where you want your slave to go

The troubles came I saved what I could save
A shred of light, a particle away
But there were chains so I hastened to behave
There were chains so I loved you like a slave

Show me the place
Show me the place
Show me the place

Show me the place, help me roll away the stone
Show me the place, I can’t move this thing alone
Show me the place where the world became a man
Show me the place where the suffering began

Cohen’s new album is out in January and more can be found of him here.
