I have written previously about Ecclesia De Lange, the South African Methodist Minister, who was suspended for announcing that she intended to marry her gay partner. Rather than embracing compassion and tolerance the Methodist church used the opportunity as a chance to push the church further back into the legacy of discrimination and oppression.
She has appealed her dismissal and is as of today is still suspended without pay and without retirement benefits while the church “deliberates”.
Her supporters have posted a YouTube clip which tells her story. We can only hope that the South African Methodist church starts to live out Jesus’ teachings of compassion, rather than the Pharisee’s example of condemnation. LGBT believers are as a much a part of the faithful community as any others who claim to follow the Way.
